With a rich tradition of viticulture and winemaking, Kefalonia has been producing premium quality wines since Homeric times. Its most famous indigenous variety, the golden-hued Robola, is a Superior Quality Designation of Origin (VQPRD) product with a rising reputation in the international wine scene.  Our tour will take you through the wineries of the Robola wine–growing zone – a semi-mountainous area on the slopes of Mt. Ainos with limestone, gravelly and barren soil. Despite the unfavourable conditions, this is where the crispy, cool and elegant Robola thrives. Nowadays often likened to a baby Assyrtiko, in the 15th century Robola was called by the Italian conquerors ”Vino di Sasso” – wine of stone, on account of its distinctive terroir. The Robola zone extends from 350 to 800 m altitude and includes several villages including Valsamata, Fragata, Troianatta, Mousata,  Vlahata, Omala, Faraklata, and Dilinata – all charmingly rural. Inextricably linked with the lives and the cuisine of the locals, Robola is indubitably the star of Kefalonia – but the island also produces two varieties of Controlled Designation of Origin, Mavrodaphne and Muscat of Kefalonia as well as other notable wines like Vostilidi, Zakynthino, Tsaoussi and Moschatella, that are gaining recognition among wine connoisseurs.
